But, in some cases, it is important to verify that the file has been downloaded correctly — especially in this case, as we are downloading an operating system! We can avoid serious trouble by simply doing a quick integrity check. Open a terminal window and run the shasum utility informing the downloaded file path:.
If there is difference between the computed and the expected checksums, something went wrong e. In that case, delete the archive and try downloading it again. Here, I briefly wrote what we needed to know today about integrity checking to install Raspbian.
If you want to know more about it, read this post:. Most cards come with this formatting from factory — including the one which came on the kit I have bought.
Note that anything currently stored on the SD card will be overwritten during formatting. So, if the card currently has any files on it, you may wish to back those files up first to not lose them permanently.
You may need to use a micro-SD card reader like the one included in the suggested kit. Open the GParted app. It asks you the administrator root user password, which you must inform to proceed. GParted takes some time scanning devices.

Follow the instructions to install the software. Go to your Downloads folder and find the zip file you downloaded. Eject the SD card. Open the zip file and extract the contents to the MicroSD card location.
Once the transfer is complete, safely eject your MicroSD card, insert it into the Raspberry Pi, and connect the Pi's power supply. Connecting your Pi to the internet will give you more installation options. From the example above, you can only see two operating systems, and that is because we are not connected to the internet.
If you connect to the internet, you will have several other operating systems you can choose from. As indicated earlier, in this tutorial, we shall use the recommended operating system, which is Raspbian.
Select the check box next to Raspbian on your left, then click on install. You will then get a pop-up indicating that the SD card will be erased. Click ok and let the installer do its thing. Be patient as this process might take approximately 45 mins to 1 hour.
When the installation is complete, you will see a pop-up saying OS es installed successfully, as shown in the image below:. Press OK. The next screen will tell you to select os to boot.
You do not have to do anything at this stage. Just relax and let the installer do its thing. The Raspberry Pi will restart and boot into the Raspbian setup screen. Click next.
