Beautiful and powerful, heartbreaking and empowering…. Everyone needs to read this book now more than ever. If you are going to read one book during these strange extraordinary times we are all living through make it this one.
The storyline was engaging and flowed seamlessly. Highly recommended! It's my first novel by Sharon Maas, and it definitely won't be my last. The story is beautifully written. There is a lot of depth to it … There were several parts, I couldn't breathe thinking the character was going to get caught. This is a work of fiction but the OSS was a real organization which infiltrated the Nazi regime and gathered the information for the allied forces. Okay, I upped it to four stars. Well written, action packed WWII novel. I was looking for a change of pace and I got it. Jul 28, Lorena rated it liked it. Interesting plot kept me reading until the end, but the voice of the main character seemed too young for what was happening in the story.
A good story, lots of action, but also quite a bit of violence as Blaise navigates the streets of France in the OSS. It was good! Love the women in war aspect, and the underdog in Lucie was fun to read. It was a bit predictable, but offered a good story line that will intrigue boys and girls alike. Worthy of a book club read and a decent choice for someone who's not super into historical fiction because WWII is more engaging than other aspects of history.

Her first mission is to kill an informant while she is disguised as a nun, but he claims to have more information, and she lets him go. When she finds out that the Nazi "secret weapon" is actually a horrific disease, she tries to figure out how to keep it from being used.
It's hard to know whom to trust, as many people have divided loyalties or are not who they claim to be. There is a lot at stake-- can Lucie manage to keep herself safe while she is trying to keep the world safe? Strengths: This had some interesting dealings with the Nazis and the various kinds of soldiers, doctors, etc. Lucie isn't the most competent spy, but it's easy to identify with her and for the reader to put herself in Lucie's place.
I like the cover. Weaknesses: It was hard to believe that Lucie was really recruited as a spy. Historical notes on real life spy organizations that involved young women might have helped. What I really think: I'll probably buy a copy of this, but it lacked some spark. May 14, Aimie rated it really liked it Shelves: arc , read , young-adult. I was intrigued by The Darkest Hour because I have been recently leaning more towards novels that contain historical fiction and strong, powerful, heroines.
Don't get me wrong, I still enjoy reading romance novels but sometimes it is nice to read something different. Lucie is an American who signed on as a part of operations in Europe and became a member of a covert ops group filled with powerful women all looking to taking down Hitler.
However, you can never really trust anyone especially when I was intrigued by The Darkest Hour because I have been recently leaning more towards novels that contain historical fiction and strong, powerful, heroines. However, you can never really trust anyone especially when someone has infiltrated your operations and the people you once thought you knew turn out to be something totally different.
The Darkest Hour mainly focused on the women, family, and inner-strength, it did not contain any romance whatsoever. There is something about reading a YA novel without romance that leaves you both empowered and yearning for an adventure of your own. The action was nonstop and breathtakingly amazing to read. I think I had a smile plastered onto my face the whole time, especially when Lucie was consumed with her operation and whether or not she should trust a Nazi defector who has knowledge about a secret weapon, instead of love interests and romance.
ARC was kindly provided by publisher, Scholastic Press, in exchange for an honest review. It was definitely an interesting book. I love how it gave us the view of a girl undercover agent. Usually we only hear about one side of the war, but did we ever think about the undercover agents working - risking their lives - to overthrow Hitler in the war? I sure didn't. After the Nazis killed her brother, she - Lucie Blaise - naively volunteered to do her part in the war. I'm not exactly sure she thought this through throughly, but what can I say?
If I had a brother, and he was killed in the It was definitely an interesting book. If I had a brother, and he was killed in the war, I would definitely want to get back at the Nazis somehow, but was becoming an undercover agent the best choice? I thought this throughout the book. What about you? This book - "The Darkest Hour" - was definitely a change from what I am used to. I finished the book with a reply close to "That's it! Get em' back Lucie!

This book is mostly about trusting others which makes sense because there is a very long exposition so we can get to know Lucie and trust her.
The book starts off with Lucie being a beginner in the covert ops during her first mission to infiltrate a house to gather intelligence with experienced members Sabine and Matilda Tilly.
With the mission succeeding, her boss Major Harken believes that she will be a great asset to the covert ops. After participating in a few other risky missions she has proven that she might not be the greatest. She has nearly given away her identity and gotten captured, but there is a reason why Major Harken keeps her in the covert ops.
Lucie found German plans to kill and conquer opposing territories called operation zerfall. These plans contain information showing a special virus the Germans created called zerfall. One day they find out that Harken is a double agent and eliminate him, any threat to the covert ops is a threat to America. Lucie goes on a mission with Sabine and Tilly to the eye of the storm to eliminate a nazi occupied facility that has reports of creating the virus.
While infiltrating the facility stealthily they get stormed by Nazis and captured, and Lucie gets injected with a serum, then blacks out. When she wakes up, she doesn't know where she is or what happened but she knows the nazis have control of her. She finds out she is contained in a nazi laboratory strapped down to a bed and is going to be the Germans lab rat. She knows she needs to get out but her attempts are useless.
She is being tested by a doctor Nacht who is slowly trying to brainwash her into becoming their pet by injecting her with a serum twice a day, even more sometimes, and influencing her into working for them.
Time goes by and they can't bring over Lucie. One day the door busts open with Sabine getting her out. With all that has happened Lucie doesn't even know if she can trust her. With enough influencing, they get Tilly, kill doctor Nacht, and attempt to escape, but they forgot the thing they came here to do: eliminate the facility. Sabine sacrifices herself to plant some aunt jemima explosives and take one for the team.
Lucie and brainwashed Tilly escape and have to travel far to a village and get help from an agent. They then get an escort to different escort who takes them to a boat leading to British territory. They arrive safely and become honored for possibly saving the world and Lucie receives the official rank of agent. I would definitely say this book was decent.
It contained action, suspense, and teamwork. I enjoyed the plot twists and betrayals the most because they impacted the story so much and really made you think.
I would recommend this book if you are looking for great suspense. It kept me on the edge of my seat for the entire way. The author included many plot twists and a lot of character development. The main character is Lucie Blaise. She is sixteen years old, and she volunteered to work for the French Resistance against the Nazis'.
The Nazis' killed her brother, so she went to the Resistance to do her part. She expected to receive a desk job, but instead, she was assigned to the field after training.
This comes as a shock to her. Not to mention she did this without her parents knowing. In the story, she must work with her partners to find and interrogate a Nazi traitor. The urgent is dire, as he contains information about a weapon that could wipe out all of Western Europe. Then, she has to find and dismantle the weapon-but it's not what she thinks. Her journey is filled with twists and turns that build up her character along the way. The time and setting of the book is the Nazi period in France, This greatly affects the book, because it provides a background for the character, but also an event in history that can teach the reader a lesson.
Especially since the holocaust is such a well known and important event in history. I enjoyed how Caroline Tung Richmond built up the character.
She slowly included bits of Lucie's past, to leave the reader curious. This is an example of writing style, and character development, as the main character reflects the past. The author does this by including letters that Lucie's brother wrote to her before he died. Lucie is also faced with many challenges that help to define who she is as a person. I think that it is good that the story is written in first person because it shows more of the emotion that the character goes through, which is crucial to the story.
I greatly enjoyed this book, and highly suggest it. May 21, Sarahi rated it really liked it. This story is set in a time where the setting elevates the interest of the reader. The fight against the Nazis, for the most part, is the main idea.
Even though the book is fiction it includes various facts about World War ll. The author created a character based on her surroundings, giving her much more power and management. Without WWll, the book's story wouldn't exist.

The main character searches for revenge, thus giving her motivation and life. This book had been recommended to me by several friends. They told me it was a great book to get into because it had both love and mystery, which is sometimes hard for a book to combine. The type of love this book includes is not anything romance, it's the love toward family and friends.
This is a way the story connects with the reader, the emotions the main character has are relatable, she goes through betrayal and loss, making her actions understandable.
The story is easy enough to read but also manages to teach you some new vocabulary throughout its pages. The mood this book puts you varies, it has moments that make you upset and heartbroken but also some moments that make you rage. Overall, this book tells a wonderful story that could be read at an early age.
This book touches many aspects of life in the past and it also does a great job reveling powerful emotions. To me a good book leaves you wondering, it leaves you with an afterthought and the mystery of what will happen next, these qualities are exactly what this book possesses. My only suggestion is that there should be a sequel.
I believe there is so much more that could happen after all of her adventures and tragedies that the reader would want to find out about. I loved this book! I was pleasantly surprised with that, too. I was expecting a cliche story about a Mary-Sue who falls in love with the enemy and everything ends happily ever after. What I received was a gripping novel about a young woman's struggle to do what's right - despite unimaginable loss and hardships along the way.
