The belt is now ready for use. This mini-buckle should stay buckled at all times unless cargo-carrying makes it necessary to detach the belt.
Page Seating and Safety Restraints 3. Insert the belt tongue into the proper buckle for your seating position until you hear a snap and feel it latch. Make sure the tongue is securely fastened to the buckle by pulling on the tongue.
Page Seating and Safety Restraints Insert the tongue into the correct buckle the buckle closest to the direction the tongue is coming from.
To lengthen the belt, turn the tongue at a right angle to the belt and pull across your lap until it reaches the buckle. Page Seating and Safety Restraints The front and rear safety restraints in the vehicle are combination lap and shoulder belts.
The front passenger outboard and rear outboard seat safety belts have two types of locking modes described below: Vehicle sensitive mode The vehicle sensitive mode is the normal retractor mode, allowing free shoulder belt length adjustment to your movements and locking in response to vehicle movement.
Page Seating and Safety Restraints How to use the automatic locking mode 1. Buckle the combination lap and shoulder belt. Grasp the shoulder portion and pull downward until the entire belt is extracted.
After any vehicle collision, the safety belt systems at all outboard seating positions except the driver position, which does not have this feature must be checked by an authorized dealer to verify that the automatic locking retractor feature for child seats is still Page Seating and Safety Restraints Safety belt usage sensors The driver and front outboard passenger safety belt buckles are equipped with sensors that detect if the safety belts are fastened.
The sensors provide information to the Personal Safety System which can then adapt the airbag deployment or safety belt pretensioner activation based upon safety belt usage. Page if equipped , shoulder belt guide on seatback if equipped , child safety seat LATCH and tether anchors, and attaching hardware, should be inspected after a collision. Ford Motor Company recommends that all safety belt assemblies in use in vehicles involved in a collision be replaced.
Page Seating and Safety Restraints If Page Seating and Safety Restraints Reasons given If you are uncomfortable - try different positions for the safety belt upper anchorage and seatback which should be as upright as possible; Sitting on the safety belt will increase the risk of injury in an accident.
To disable one-time or deactivate the Belt Minder feature please follow the directions stated below. Within 10 seconds of the light turning on, buckle then unbuckle the safety belt. The airbag supplemental restraints are an integral part of the Personal Safety System.
They are designed to be deployed in cases where the Personal Safety System has determined the occupant conditions and crash severity are appropriate to activate these devices. Do not put anything on or over the airbag cover 1. Page Seating and Safety Restraints Children and airbags For additional important safety information, read all information on safety restraints in this guide.
Children must always be properly restrained. Accident statistics suggest that children are safer when properly restrained in the rear seat than in the front seat.
Page Seating and Safety Restraints How does the airbag supplemental restraint system work? The airbag SRS is designed to activate when the vehicle sustains sufficient longitudinal deceleration.
The fact that the airbags did not inflate in a collision does not mean that something is wrong with the system. Page Seating and Safety Restraints If the airbag has deployed, the airbag will not function again and must be replaced immediately. If the airbag is not replaced, the unrepaired area will increase the risk of injury in a collision.
Determining if the system is operational The SRS uses readiness lights in the instrument cluster or a tone to indicate the condition of the system. Also see Airbag supplemental restraint system SRS in this chapter for special instructions about using airbags. Important child restraint precautions You are required by law to use safety restraints for children in the U. Page To improve the fit of both the lap and shoulder belt on children who have outgrown child safety seats, Ford Motor Company recommends use of a belt-positioning booster.
Booster seats position a child so that safety belts fit better. They lift the child up so that the lap belt rests low across the hips and the knees bend comfortably.
Page Seating and Safety Restraints Children and booster seats vary widely in size and shape. Choose a booster that keeps the lap belt low and snug across the hips, never up across the stomach, and lets you adjust the shoulder belt to cross the chest and rest snugly near the center of the shoulder. Page Seating and Safety Restraints Never use pillows, books, or towels to boost a child.
They can slide around and increase the likelihood of injury or death in a collision. Page 36 kg 80 pounds using an upper torso harness and a belt-positioning booster. Ford recommends the use of a child safety seat having a top tether strap. Page Seating and Safety Restraints 1. Position the child safety seat in a seat with a combination lap and shoulder belt. Pull down on the shoulder belt and then grasp the shoulder belt and lap belt together.
While holding the shoulder and lap belt portions together, route the tongue through the child seat according to the child seat Page Seating and Safety Restraints 4. Insert the belt tongue into the proper buckle the buckle closest to the direction the tongue is coming from for that seating position until you hear a snap and feel the latch engage. Make sure the tongue is latched securely by pulling on it.
Page Seating and Safety Restraints 8. Allow the safety belt to retract to remove any slack in the belt. Before placing the child in the seat, forcibly move the seat forward and back to make sure the seat is securely held in place. To check this, grab the seat at the belt path and attempt to move it side to side and forward. Page Seating and Safety Restraints 5. Insert the belt tongue into the proper buckle for that seating positions until you hear a snap and feel it latch.
Make sure the tongue is securely latched to the buckle by pulling on the tongue. Page Seating and Safety Restraints 9. The shoulder belt must be snug to keep the lap belt tight during a collision. Installing child safety seats in the front row lap belt seating positions SuperCab and SuperCrew Installing a child safety seat in the front row lap seating position should be avoided if at all possible. Page Seating and Safety Restraints The passenger seats of your vehicle are equipped with built-in tether strap anchors located behind the seats as described below.
The tether anchors in your vehicle may be loops of webbing above the seatback or an anchor bracket behind the seat on the rear edge of the seat cushion. Make sure the seatback is locked in the upright position before installing the child seat. Clip the tether strap to the anchor as shown. Page Seating and Safety Restraints If the safety seat is not anchored properly, the risk of a child being injured in a collision greatly increases. Rear seat tether strap attachment There are three loops of webbing just above the back of the rear seat along the bottom edge of the rear window in the SuperCab and SuperCrew.
Route the tether strap behind the head restraint supports to a loop behind an adjacent seating position, and hook the strap hook onto the loop. Page Seating and Safety Restraints If you install a child seat with rigid LATCH attachments, do not tighten the tether strap enough to lift the child seat off the vehicle seat cushion when the child is seated in it.
Keep the tether strap just snug without lifting the front of the child seat. Utility vehicles and trucks are not designed for cornering at speeds as high as passenger cars any more than low-slung sports cars are designed Page Tires, Wheels and Loading Power is supplied to all four wheels through a transfer case or power transfer unit.
Information on transfer case operation and shifting procedures can be found in the Driving chapter. Page 10 to 12 inches or limited production tires as defined in Title 49 Code of Federal Regulations Part Department of Transportation-Tire quality grades: The U.
Department of Transportation requires Ford Motor Company to give you the following information about tire grades exactly as the government has written it. Page Tires, Wheels and Loading Treadwear The treadwear grade is a comparative rating based on the wear rate of the tire when tested under controlled conditions on a specified government test course.
Page Always inflate your tires to the Ford recommended inflation pressure even if it is less than the maximum inflation pressure information found on the tire. The cold inflation pressure should never be set lower than the recommended pressure on the Safety Compliance Certification Label or Tire Label. Page Tires, Wheels and Loading 6.
Visually inspect the tires to make sure there are no nails or other objects embedded that could poke a hole in the tire and cause an air leak. Check the sidewalls to make sure there are no gouges, cuts or bulges. Page Only use replacement tires and wheels that are the same size and type such as P-metric versus LT-metric or all-season versus all-terrain as those originally provided by Ford.
Use of any tire or wheel not recommended by Ford can affect the safety and performance of your vehicle, which could result in an increased risk of loss of vehicle control, vehicle rollover, personal injury and death. Page Tires, Wheels and Loading It is recommended that the two front tires or two rear tires generally be replaced as a pair. Safety practices Driving habits have a great deal to do with your tire mileage and safety. Page Tires, Wheels and Loading Front wheel drive FWD vehicles and those with an independent rear suspension if equipped may require alignment of all four wheels.
The tires should also be balanced periodically. An unbalanced tire and wheel assembly may result in irregular tire wear. Tire rotation Rotating your tires at the recommended interval as indicated in the scheduled maintenance information that comes with your vehicle will Page Tires, Wheels and Loading Note: After having your tires rotated, inflation pressure must be checked and adjusted to the vehicle requirements.
This information identifies and describes the fundamental characteristics of the tire and also provides a U. Page Tires, Wheels and Loading Note: You may not find this information on all tires because it is not required by federal law. The speed rating denotes the speed at which a tire is designed to be driven for extended periods of time under a standard condition of load and inflation pressure.
Page Tires, Wheels and Loading 9. Tire Ply Composition and Material Used: Indicates the number of plies or the number of layers of rubber-coated fabric in the tire tread and sidewall. Note: The temporary tire size for your vehicle may be different from this example. The tires on your vehicle have all weather treads to provide traction in rain and snow.
However, in some climates, you may need to use snow tires and chains. Page Tires, Wheels and Loading Payload — is the combined weight of cargo and passengers that the vehicle is carrying.
When towing, trailer tongue load or king pin weight is also part of cargo weight. The total load on each axle must never exceed its GAWR. Page Tires, Wheels and Loading Maximum Loaded Trailer Weight — is the highest possible weight of a fully loaded trailer the vehicle can tow.
Page Tires, Wheels and Loading 5. Determine the combined weight of luggage and cargo being loaded on the vehicle. That weight may not safely exceed the available cargo and luggage load capacity calculated in Step 4. If your vehicle will be towing a trailer, load from your trailer will be transferred to your vehicle. Loaded vehicles may handle differently than unloaded vehicles.
Park the unloaded vehicle on a level surface. With the ignition on and all doors closed, allow the vehicle to stand for several minutes so that it can level.
Page Tires, Wheels and Loading Using a step bumper if equipped The rear bumper is equipped with an integral hitch and only requires a ball with a one inch The bumper has a 5, lb. If it is necessary to relocate the trailer hitch ball position, a frame-mounted trailer hitch must be installed. Note: The ignition key cannot be removed from the ignition unless the gearshift lever is securely latched in P Park. Page Driving Do not start your vehicle in a closed garage or in other enclosed areas.
Exhaust fumes can be toxic. Always open the garage door before you start the engine. See Guarding against exhaust fumes in this chapter for more instructions. If you smell exhaust fumes inside your vehicle, have your dealer inspect your vehicle immediately. Page Driving Starting the engine 1. If there is difficulty in turning the key, rotate the steering wheel until the key turns freely. When the engine starts, release the key, then gradually release the accelerator pedal as the engine speeds up. This system helps you maintain steering control during emergency stops by keeping the brakes from locking.
The BRAKE warning lamp will illuminate and will remain illuminated until the parking brake is released. This system helps you maintain the stability and steerability of your vehicle, especially on slippery road surfaces such as snow- or ice-covered roads and gravel roads.
The system will allow your vehicle to make better use of available traction in these conditions. In a rollover crash, an unbelted person is significantly more likely to die than a person wearing a seat belt. Your vehicle has larger tires and increased ground clearance, giving the vehicle a higher center of gravity than a passenger car.
Page Driving 2. Locate the round access plug on the underside of the steering column cover. Remove the access plug using a flat head screwdriver, then push the override button using a flat head screwdriver, apply the brake pedal and shift the transmission into N Neutral.
Open the center console bin. Using a screwdriver, carefully pry off the console finish panel surrounding the shifter mechanism by inserting a screwdriver into the latch slot as shown. Remove console finish panel assembly to expose the inside of the gearshift.
Page Driving If the parking brake is fully released, but the brake warning lamp remains illuminated, the brakes may not be working properly. See your authorized dealer. Turn the ignition to the LOCK position and remove the key whenever you leave your vehicle. Drive not shown Drive is activated when the transmission control switch is pressed.
Page Driving During each shift, the clutch pedal must be fully depressed to the floor. Failure to fully depress the clutch pedal to the floor may cause increased shift efforts, prematurely wear transmission components or damage the transmission.
Reverse 1. Page Driving To help avoid personal injury, always use caution when in reverse and when using the RSS. This system is not designed to prevent contact with small or moving objects. The system is designed to provide a warning to assist the driver in detecting large stationary objects to avoid damaging the vehicle. Illuminates when 4L is selected.
